Three Tips to Help First-Time Movers Choose the Right Truck Rental Company

by Keith Simpson

There is a great deal of stress associated with moving out for the first time. However, with proper planning and adequate information, moving out can be a stress-free experience. If you decide to rent a moving truck to carry your belongings to a new location, you should consider all the risks involved. Sadly, some truck rental companies may deliberately and conveniently hide valuable information from you. This article gives a few tips to guide first-time movers in choosing the right truck rental company

Ask for New or Well-Serviced Trucks -- Many truck rental companies' websites show pictures of new moving trucks fresh from the assembly line. However, this may not be the actual case in reality because some of their trucks may be dilapidated due to years of use. To guarantee that the truck you rent gets to your new destination without mechanical hitches, have the truck rental company give you assurances regarding the state of their trucks. Since you will bear all repair and related costs after signing the contract, you can save yourself a lot of money if you get a well-serviced truck.

Early Reservation and Follow-Up Phone Calls -- When it comes to the business of moving out, a reservation is not only a common practice but also a requirement. Imagine packing all your belongings, and being ready to go only to find out that there is no truck available when you call your preferred rental agency. Avoid this problem by booking a rental truck well in advance. Even after making a reservation a month in advance, always make follow-up calls to determine if it still holds. Sometimes, factors beyond the company's control can lead to the cancellation of the reservation. A simple phone call can help solve this issue and eliminate any possible inconvenience.

Check Rental Quotes and Promotions -- Truck rental agencies use advertisements and promotions to attract prospective clients and remain competitive. Ensure that the prices quoted in these promotions and ads are what you will be paying. The cost of hiring a moving truck may fluctuate in response to market forces and other factors, and hence the disparity between the quoted price and what you pay. Also, make sure that the quotation offered explicitly states whether it is for out-of-town moving or in-town moving. Before signing the contract, exhaust all options that can save on rental costs by taking advantage of free mileage and decreased rates during promotions.
